[05/07/20]   Dear Patients and Parents of Bernhardt and Smith Orthodontics,

We were extremely pleased to hear that last night, Governor Reynolds signed a proclamation allowing dental services to resume starting this Friday, May 8th. All dental offices around the country, including ours, will have new protocols in place due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We have been working extremely hard behind the scenes to be ready for this. We will send out more information very soon regarding these changes and what you can expect to see when we reopen.

A member of our staff will reach out to you starting next week to reschedule your appointment. At this point in time, there is no need to call our office unless you have an orthodontic emergency or if you have questions.

We ask for your patience and grace during this time as we prepare for your return. We understand that there are questions and concerns that many of you have right now. We want to assure all of you that, in these unprecedented times, we are doing the best that we can to navigate this in the most careful and appropriate way.

While there will be a new look and new systems in place, our long-standing goal of providing high quality orthodontic treatment in a safe environment has never changed. We are excited to see everyone again!

Sincerely,

Dr. Bernhardt, Dr. Smith and the entire staff at Bernhardt and Smith Orthodontics

Happy May 1st everyone! Here are some updated photos of the new office! It’s really coming together! We can’t wait for you all to see it! 😊

[04/20/20]   Dear Patients and Parents of Bernhardt and Smith Orthodontics,

We hope that you all are staying well throughout this uncertain time. While most of our recent correspondence has been about the pandemic and mandatory shutdown, we have some exciting news to share! Our South 50th office will soon be moving north just a few blocks. Our new location will be at the northeast corner of 50th and EP True at 245 50th Street, Suite 120.

We are truly excited about our new office as it will provide a new configuration in the treatment area, more space in the waiting room, a dedicated restroom for patients/families and much more. We have set a tentative date to open May 19th, however that date could change. We will keep you posted on any news related to the opening of this new location.

As usual, please call if you have any questions regarding our relocation or any questions related to the mandatory closures. You are welcome to check our page for updates on the construction progress. We are truly excited about our new office relocation and appreciate your support!

Sincerely,
Dr. Melissa Bernhardt, Dr. Blair Smith and the entire team at Bernhardt and Smith Orthodontics

Happy Friday! We have some updated photos of the new 50th Street office! We hope you all have a wonderful weekend! 😁

[04/05/20]   Dear Patients and Parents of Bernhardt and Smith Orthodontics,

Yesterday, Governor Reynolds extended the proclamation to suspend all elective and nonessential dental procedures in Iowa through 11:59 p.m. on April 30, 2020. Emergency dental services are still permitted.

Therefore, we are canceling all orthodontic appointments through Thursday, April 30. A team member from our office will be contacting you next week to verify you received this message. You do not need to contact us unless you have questions. We will contact you at a later date to reschedule. At this time, if your appointment is scheduled on May 4th or later, we are planning to keep those appointments. This situation continues to be very fluid, and if further postponement of elective procedures is required, we will contact you regarding any further scheduling changes. As we stated in our last email, once we have a concrete date of when the office will be able to open, we will do our best to reschedule in a timely manner.

If you or your child are experiencing an orthodontic emergency, please call ahead to schedule a time to come in. Per CDC recommendations, if the patient has any symptoms – acute respiratory illness (e.g. fever, cough, sore throat, recent difficulty breathing), or has traveled internationally or been in contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19 within the past 14 days, we will unfortunately not be able to see the patient for any reason. We are requesting that only the patient come inside the office, if possible. We will also be staggering any emergency appointments, so there should never be more than one patient at the office at a time.

During this mandate, we will be temporarily closing our South 50th Street location. Our Bishop Drive location will continue to be open. Please call 515-987-9130 during this time if there are any questions or you have an orthodontic emergency. Once we are able to see patients for elective procedures again, our South 50th location will reopen. Our temporary office hours during this time will be from 8am-4pm Monday-Thursday, and 8am-noon on Friday.

We understand that many patients who are wearing elastics/rubber bands may run out. Please call our office to request more elastics. Let us know the size, and we can either mail them out or leave them in an envelope outside our office for you to pick up. We just ask that you not come inside the office to pick them up.

We know is a difficult time for everyone, and we sincerely apologize how this may affect you or your child. Please know that we are thinking of all of you and are making all decisions with the best interest of our patients, staff, and community in mind.

Sincerely,

Dr. Melissa Bernhardt, Dr. Blair Smith and the entire team at Bernhardt and Smith Orthodontics

We hope you all are staying safe and healthy! We truly miss our patients and wanted to bring you some humor for today!

“And while you’re at the sink, why not brush too?” 🤣

Happy Monday! We are so thankful the ☀️ is shining and for these updated photos of the 50th Street office! It’s coming along very nicely! 😊

[03/27/20]   Dear Patients and Parents of Bernhardt and Smith Orthodontics,

Yesterday, Governor Reynolds issued a new proclamation continuing the State Public Health Emergency
Declaration. As part of this proclamation, there is now a mandate for all dentists and their staff to refrain
from performing elective dental procedures and nonessential or elective surgeries continuing through
11:59 p.m. on April 16, 2020. Emergency dental services are still permitted.

The proclamation is as follows:
“All dentists and their staff shall refrain from performing elective dental procedures, including: any
cosmetic or aesthetic procedures; all routine hygiene; any orthodontic procedures other than those
necessary to relieve pain or infection or to restore normal oral functioning; initiation of crowns, bridges, or
dentures that do not address or prevent pain or restore normal oral functioning; any periodontal plastic
surgery; extraction of asymptomatic non-carious teeth; recall visits for periodontally-healthy patients; and
all appointments for high-risk patients, including ASA 2 and 3 patients, unless emergent.”

Therefore, we are canceling all orthodontic appointments through Thursday, April 16. A team member
from our office will be contacting you next week to verify you received this message. You do not need to
contact us unless you have questions. We will contact you at a later date to reschedule. At this time, if
your appointment is scheduled on April 20th or later, we are planning to keep those appointments. This
situation continues to be very fluid, and if further postponement of elective procedures is required, we will
contact you regarding any further scheduling changes. As we stated in our last email, once we have a
concrete date of when the office will be able to open, we will do our best to reschedule in a timely
manner.

If you or your child are experiencing an orthodontic emergency, please call ahead to schedule a time to
come in. Per CDC recommendations, if the patient has any symptoms – acute respiratory illness (e.g.
fever, cough, sore throat, recent difficulty breathing), or has traveled internationally or been in contact with
someone diagnosed with COVID-19 within the past 14 days, we will unfortunately not be able to see the
patient for any reason. We are requesting that only the patient come inside the office, if possible. We will
also be staggering any emergency appointments, so there should never be more than one patient at the
office at a time.

We know this is a difficult time for everyone, and we sincerely apologize how this may affect you or your
child. Please know that we are thinking of all of you and are making all decisions with the best interest of
our patients, staff, and community in mind.

Sincerely,
Dr. Melissa Bernhardt, Dr. Blair Smith and the entire team at Bernhardt and Smith Orthodontics

Happy Friday, everyone! We are over here looking at the map for some weekend travel ideas! 🤪

Happy Friday everyone! We wanted to bring some smiles to your faces with these updated photos of the new 50th Street office opening on May 19th! 😊

[03/19/20]   Dear Patients and Parents of Bernhardt and Smith Orthodontics,

Our top priority is the health and well-being of our patients, families, staff and community. We are deeply committed to keeping everyone safe. Following the American Dental Association recommendations, the Iowa Department of Public Health and Iowa Dental Board have recommended dentists statewide postpone elective dental treatment for the next three weeks to help mitigate the spread of Covid-19. Understanding how important these guidelines are, we have decided to follow their recommendations.

Therefore, we are cancelling all orthodontic appointments now through Thursday, April 2. A team member from our office will be contacting you within a few business days to verify you received this message. You do not need to contact us unless you have questions. We will contact you at a later date to reschedule. At this time, if your appointment is scheduled on April 6th or later, we are planning to keep those appointments. As you are well aware, this situation is very fluid and if further postponement of elective procedures is recommended, we will contact you regarding any further scheduling changes.

Once we have a concrete date of when the office will be able to open, we will do our best to reschedule in a timely manner. Some appointments with less priority will likely be rescheduled several weeks out. Priority will be given to those who are currently in active treatment, and we will do our best to reschedule those patients as soon as possible. We kindly ask for your patience and understanding with this extremely challenging situation.

Per CDC recommendations, if the patient has any symptoms - acute respiratory illness (e.g. fever, cough, sore throat, recent difficulty breathing), or has recently traveled internationally, especially to currently identified Level 3 Travel Health Notice Countries, unfortunately we will be unable to see the patient for any reason for at least 14 days.
Our office will be open to handle any orthodontic emergencies. Please call ahead of time to schedule, and we will be glad to help out. We understand that there may be some unique circumstances where you are not sure if something qualifies as an emergency. Please do not hesitate to call our office and we will assist you through this process.

We will be implementing some additional office/patient policies in light of the Coronavirus pandemic. We will be sending out this information soon.

We want to truly apologize for this inconvenience and how this may affect your schedule. Please understand we are making this decision with the health and well-being of our patients and families, our team, and our community in mind. Again, we appreciate your patience and understanding.

Sincerely,
Dr. Melissa Bernhardt, Dr. Blair Smith and the entire team at Bernhardt and Smith Orthodontics
