Des Moines Children’s Dentistry has provided amazing care for my children over the last few years. They are friendly, professional, kind and really good at what they do. I appreciate the preventative procedures they have in place to prevent my children’s exposure to Covid. Thank you!
I am so impressed with the staff and dentists at Des Moines Children's Dentistry. We have four young children who all had routine dental exams. With COVID-19, we have postponed countless appointments because we simply weren’t comfortable leaving our home and risking exposure. A few days before our appointments, I was given the updated protocol; each child would go in individually with a staff member to minimize exposure in the common areas. They made sure to reiterate that there was no pressure; if one of our kids had a hard time going in by themselves, we could always reschedule. It was certainly extra work on their end to do temperature checks and communicate over the phone and through car windows in the parking lot, but it brought me peace of mind knowing they are taking precautions to flatten the curve and keep our kids safe and healthy.

This popped in my memories she has came long ways and gets excited go dentist now.. now she excited that she have loose teeth.. soon my 3 year old get there..
Tommy has fun flossing while he flosses! 😆
This office is absolutely amazing! I brought all three of my kids in this morning ranging from 11 to 3 and as always the office staff was warm and welcoming. The wait was short and hygienist made sure to come out and let me know what her plans was, the order she would take the kids and even explained why before I had the chance to ask. Alisha was the hygienist that they saw. She was so sweet and patient. She took the time to explain to my older two how they could improve their brushing and checked for understanding. She did all of this in a manner which positive and left the boys with a good feeling about teeth and seeing the dentist. When it came to my three year old, this was the first time she had had a cleaning with the dentistry tools. Alisha made picking the flavors fun, explained each step and had Kylie entertained and laughing. Even when trying to get her to stay still for X-rays. In general, her manner was positive, intelligent and confident. She made the situation so much easier and pleasant. Any parent knows that taking three kids at the same time can be stressful but this office made the trip so smooth. Dr Warrington as always was pleasant and informative. He made sure that I was educated on the choices that we had, what the best option was and always leaves the situation with you being comfortable and reassured that he knows exactly what he is doing and that your children are in good hands. Thank you guys for all being so wonderful and making these situations consistently pleasant. We love the staff and are so glad to have found this office! See you again soon!!

American Dental Association: Dentistry is Essential Health Care

We support the recommendation put forth by the ADA regarding dental care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rest assured, our office has implemented all the recommendations mentioned in this publication and are following the guidance of the Iowa Dental Board and CDC. The health and safety of your family is our top priority. #dentistryisessentialhealthcare

ada.org The American Dental Association (ADA) respectfully yet strongly disagrees with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendation to delay “routine” dental care in certain situations due to COVID-19.

We had to say “goodbye for now” to a special member of our team this week as our very own Emily begins an exciting new chapter in her life. Emily is beginning her Dental School journey at Creighton University this week on her way to becoming a doctor. While we are going to miss her terribly, (and we know you all will, too) we could not be more proud of her for pursuing her dreams. Please join us in wishing her the best of luck in her next 4 years (p.s. It’s also her birthday today!!).

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Alison Christensen to the DSMCD Family! We know you and your children will love her as much as we do and we can't wait for each of you to meet her smiling face. Dr. Alison is an Iowa native and University of Iowa College of Dentistry alum who has recently relocated her family to the metro to join our team. Please leave her some well wishes and make sure to say "hello" to her at your next appointment!

Thanks to our talented patient, Josue R., for this great drawing of our staff in their PPE!! Awesome kids like you are why we love pediatric dentistry!

Jill

Jill, Thank you so much for your kind words about our office! We appreciate your trust and confidence during this difficult time.

Shelley

Thank you, Shelley Ann, for your feedback about our COVID protocols. We know how hard this is for our patients and their families--it is hard for us, too! We can't wait to get back to having everyone join us chairside for their children's appointments. Until then, we appreciate the trust and confidence families like you place in our doctors and staff.

[03/13/20]   UPDATED - Monday, May 18:

To our dental family:
At this time we are slowly beginning the process of reopening following the recommendations by Governor Reynolds. We will be reaching out in the next few weeks to attempt to reschedule your child. If your child's appointment is scheduled for any date moving forward, we are planning to see your child as scheduled when possible. If your child has an acute dental emergency, including severe pain, facial swelling due to an infection, or broken teeth from a fall, please contact our emergency phone line at 515-225-1677. Any patients coming to our office will now be asked to observe the following:

1. When you arrive, call the office to check in.

2. One of our staff will come out to check in your family. All patients and their parents will have their temperatures taken and health information updated in the parking lot before the patient is taken in the building.

3. Children will need to wear a mask to enter and exit the building.

4. NO non-patients will be in the office for our first two weeks. This is to protect your child, as well as other people’s children while we begin implementing our new protocols and addressing our most urgent dental patients.

We want all of our patients and their families to trust that we have worked hard to create the safest possible environment for your children's healthcare. Fortunately for our office, very little has had to change. Our office has always exceeded infection control standards set by the Iowa Dental Board, the CDC, and OSHA.

Additionally, we are now taking temperatures and medical histories of all our staff and anyone who enters the office every day.

We have also changed our preventive (cleaning) appointments to eliminate aerosol generation.

We will now be changing our PPE between any patient who's treatment generates aerosols.

We are requiring our staff to wear gowns, surgical masks, scrub hats, and face shields for their entire shift within the office.

We will continue to sterilize each patient’s instruments individually in our autoclave and will continue to wait until the patient is in the room and seated to open any instruments that will be used for that child.

We will continue to use high level disinfectant to clean all surfaces that come in contact with our patient during the appointment.

Our staff will be changing clothes upon entering our facility each morning and all clothing will be laundered on site to prevent transfer of germs from outside the office.

All of our aerosol generating procedures are completed in closed rooms that will be alternated throughout the day to mitigate exposure between patients.

We appreciate all of your support, encouragement, and patience during this incredibly difficult time. We can't wait to see all of our patient's smiling faces and look forward to welcoming them all back to the office!

Thank you for the awesome pizza party Bernhardt & Smith Orthodontics PC!!

Des Moines Children's Dentistry

We are so EXCITED and PROUD to finally be open at our new location in Waukee! Thank you Payton and Kinley for being our very first patients!! Your sweet smiles helped calm our nerves and got us off to a great start!

Sarah, thank you for taking time to come visit our practice and learn about who we are and the wonderful patients we serve. We are glad you are interested to learn about several of the challenges facing providers in helping the children of Iowa. We are so thankful for your support, and your efforts to help connect members of the community in meaningful ways to impact Iowa’s most important citizens, our children.

This morning I visited Des Moines Children's Dentistry in West Des Moines. About 60% of the patients in this practice are on Medicaid, and they serve many cases that need specialists. Patients come from as far away as the Missouri border. In order to keep the practice financially viable given low Medicaid reimbursement rates they need to serve a high volume of patients (70-90 on a regular day), but they also don’t want to turn away patients who can’t find another Medicaid provider. The office is beautiful and the staff are exceptional—they want to make sure every patient feels well cared for, and it really makes a difference in good outcomes.

I see some important opportunities for Iowa:

Some first time pediatric patients need surgery with anesthesia or in the hospital because their decay is so severe. I heard stories about 3 year olds needing surgery for tooth decay! Preventative care and education could reduce costs and the risks that come from such intensive procedures.

Relationships with providers matter! The practice told me about families in which a good experience with the provider meant an ongoing relationship and better health for the entire family. While the oldest child may have first come to the practice with significant decay, the younger children had better tooth health because they learned good practices and were consistent in preventative care visits.

Dentistry is not always a part of medical provider training. MD’s, nurses, other care providers have an opportunity to help with early intervention and education on an issue that really impacts overall health and wellbeing.

This practice trains a lot of their own Dental Assistants on the job. Many of their staff do additional education to progress in the field, but the practice is not able to offer an education benefit. There is a great need for staff to work in Medicaid dental practices, and for multi-lingual staff.

Thank you to the Iowa Dental Association for giving me the opportunity to meet Dr. Rachael! Thank you to Office Manger Melanie and Dr. Stephanie for your time today!

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Stephanie Turner to our practice. Dr. Turner comes to us with 7 years of experience working in pediatric, public health and general dentistry. She is a 2012 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, and has settled in her hometown of Urbandale after practicing across the country since 2013. We could not be happier to have Dr. Turner as part of our team! She is looking forward to meeting all of our awesome patients and families.

Halloween 2018

Our favorite time of the year has finally arrived!

Our favorite time of the year has finally arrived!

When we opened Des Moines Children’s Dentistry just over five years ago we could never have predicted being where we are today. We have had overwhelming support from amazing patients, colleagues, and community members who have become part of our family and helped us grow faster than we could have ever hoped. Unfortunately, we are simply running out of openings to add new patients to our family. In order to continue our mission to serve the children of Central Iowa, we made a big decision to expand by building a second location. We are so excited to announce that summer 2019 will see a new Des Moines Children’s Dentistry location coming to WAUKEE! We are so appreciative of all the love and support from our patients and their families over the last five years, and we can’t wait to see what the next five has in store.
