How do oral bacteria make colorectal cancer more aggressive? - Medical News

Yikes! A bacteria in tooth decay is found in aggressive colon cancers. Decay is stealthy, causing symptoms when it has destroyed enough of the tooth to cause pain. That's why it's important to visit the dentist so x-rays are taken to see what's going on under the surface of the teeth. A healthy body starts with a healthy mouth, and a visit to the dentist! Scientists have identified a molecular mechanism through which an oral bacterium accelerates colorectal cancer growth. An oral bacterium with links to tooth decay may speed up the growth of colorectal cancer. Tests have shown that around a third of people who develop colorectal cancer also have the....

Your New Year's Resolution hopefully includes maintaining a healthy mouth. But be careful of one new trend: CHARCOAL Toothpastes.
These types of toothpastes aren't regulated and may be abrasive to your teeth and gums. Next time you're in the office, be sure to mention any new products you may be using so we can help you keep your mouth healthy!

[09/12/17]   Churchill Dentistry is closed today, Tuesday September 12 due to the hurricane. We plan to be open on Thursday. We hope everyone is safe and that those who have lost power get it back quickly.

[08/05/16]   To all those who hate to floss, DO NOT listen to the new government recommendation which says flossing is not necessary. (see link below). There are not a lot of studies either way proving or disproving if flossing is necessary (and the recent ones say it's not). That, folks, is the difference between "evidence-based care" (the buzzword in medicine) and practical experience. Dentistry, unlike medicine, has historically not been hampered by studies dictating care. Alas, that will soon be coming to an end as dentistry succumbs to a medical model of care.

Is Flossing Necessary? Harrison Dentist Among Many Saying 'Absolutely' HARRISON, N.Y. -- Dentists aren't buying into the new federal guidelines that dismiss flossing as unnecessary, pointing to causal evidence and clinical observation that cleaning between teeth is a necessary part of good dental hygiene.Fl...

[07/15/14]   Some patients have been asking about a fad called "oil pulling". It is an ancient "therapy" that recommends rinsing your mouth for 15 minutes with coconut oil to whiten teeth, get rid of bad breath or cure a variety of ailments. While there is nothing inherently harmful with doing this, be aware that these stories are anecdotal, not scientific. I love coconut oil as a substance for my body. It is often used as a surfactant in alternative soaps, so you could say that this method would be a kin to washing your mouth out with soap!

[07/04/14]   Did you know Carrollwood is named in honor of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, signer of The Declaration of Independence? Wishing my patients a celebratory day of freedom.

Great advice for our hectic lifestyles. Be well!

A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they'd be asked the "half empty or half full" question. Instead, with a smile on her face, she inquired: "How heavy is this glass of water?"

Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz.

She replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn't change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes." She continued, "The stresses and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed – incapable of doing anything."

It’s important to remember to let go of your stresses. As early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don't carry them through the evening and into the night. Remember to put the glass down!

For interesting stuff : Science is Madness

[02/01/14]   Did you know you miss 40% of your tooth surfaces by not flossing? It takes 66 days to form a habit so don't give up on that New Year's resolution to floss more!
