Children who continue to suck on their thumbs or on pacifiers after the age of five (and particularly those who continue after permanent teeth begin to emerge) are at high-risk for developing dental complications.
Ask your dentist to speak with the child about stopping. Often, the message is heard more clearly when delivered by a health professional and your dentist can provide further guidance on the issue.

Happy! National Brush Day
What better time to celebrate National Brush Your Teeth Day than the day after Halloween. Make sure your kids are brushing their teeth #2min2x a day!

Happy Halloween from all of us at Westwood Family Dental Center
Have a safe and happy Halloween!!

Halloween is supposed to be scary, but that doesn’t mean it should be for your teeth.
Jawbreakers and hard gumballs can damage teeth by causing chips or breaks. Sticky candies, like Tootsie Rolls, Candy Corn, Skittles, caramels, or gummies have a tendency to get stuck in the grooves of teeth and are more likely to dodge toothbrushes. You can also look for sugar-free options of these classic favorites. Halloween treats aren’t limited to candy.
Here are a few alternative ideas:
•Temporary tattoos
•Small toys like bubbles, yo-yos, •Finger puppets
•Spooky rings or wristbands
•Fruit
•Snack-size bags of crackers
•Snack-size bags of crackers pretzels
•Stickers
•Pencil toppers or erasers

Get creative and protect children’s teeth this Halloween!

What are dental sealants?
Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the grooves on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to protect them from tooth decay. Most tooth decay in children and teens occurs on these surfaces. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces from tooth decay by keeping germs and food particles out of these grooves.

Hurricane Matthew: US evacuations underway

If you have any friends or family on the East Coast, make sure that they are either fully prepared, or evacuate the area. Hurricanes are dangerous, and those that live here in Florida know that this storm should not be taken lightly. Stay safe!

The effects of drinking soda has on your teeth.
First, soft drinks can contain 10 to 12 teaspoons of sugar per serving.
So, when you drink a soda, you are essentially bathing your teeth in liquid sugar.
The bacteria that naturally live on your teeth feed on that sugar and produce acid. Without proper care, the acid dissolves the surface of your teeth and creates a cavity.
The acids wash over your teeth, affecting the entire tooth structure. Over time, they erode the hard, protective enamel, causing your teeth to get thinner and expose the sensitive dentin layer inside your tooth.

Today is National Chewing Gum Day

Chewing sugarless gum has been shown to increase the flow of saliva, thereby reducing plaque acid, strengthening the teeth and reducing tooth decay.
