Trina has a new smile!
smile the smile it is not but a grin; a toothless delight; a flash of pearly brights; the truth in the smile is the connection of one one to another; above the chin you share a sparkle; sent and received in in the twinkle of the eye; its an emotional lifting from one to another It defies gravity as all else seems to be pulling one down like a dimly lit flickering candle strengthened through a gust of love just for a moment ones whole self reaches towards the heavenly skies'

After nearly 8 years of steady growth in helping formerly incarcerated people receive the restorative dental work they needed to start life anew, nonprofit, Smiles Beyond the Bars, is expanding its mission and changing its name to Smiles and Beyond to accommodate more individuals in need, specifically victims of domestic violence.

Having served more than 300 formerly incarcerated women and men since its inception in late 2010 and anticipating 25 domestic violence survivors to become recipients this year, Smiles and Beyond is growing rapidly as it continues to fulfill its mission of helping women and men regain confidence, get jobs and comfortably settle into their new lives.

“We’ve seen so many success stories from the women and men who have been selected to receive our services for the major dental work they so desperately needed,” said Founder and CEO Linda Parker-Smith. “We see the same opportunity to help the victims of domestic violence, and it starts with helping them to smile.”

It’s a natural expansion for Smiles and Beyond. The faith-based organization began as an idea in 2009 after Parker-Smith lost many of her close family members around the same time. With a background in all aspects of dental care management, Parker-Smith discovered helping formerly incarcerated women and men was her calling after attending a meeting of Along Side Ministries (ASM), which focuses on rehabilitation. From there, she amassed a local community of 60 dentists and dental labs that provide in-kind services, resources, supplies and talents to help nearly 100 recipients annually.

Recipients, on average, require $40-60,000 worth of dental work that otherwise would have been impossible for them to afford on their own. Dental work can range from surgical removal of all teeth to jaw reconstruction and implants to replace the removed teeth. Smiles and Beyond recipients will continue to be carefully selected based on a strong vetting process and a commitment to making a better life for themselves.

“We saw a significant need in our community for abuse survivors,” Parker-Smith said. “When individuals are in domestic abuse situations, dental visits are often neglected and sometimes the face bears the brunt of the trauma. We are thrilled to help give these individuals a fresh start.”

Smiles and Beyond has seen how successful dental restorations can be for the nearly 300 women and men who have already experienced the nonprofit’s in-kind services totaling nearly $8 million in dental treatments to date. As Smiles and Beyond begins to serve this new demographic, the Board is actively accepting donations. To learn more about Smiles & Beyond, or to donate, visit www.smilesandbeyond.org

The best gift you can give someone this joyous holiday season is a SMILE!
It warms your heart and theirs.

Vicky is but one of many deserving recipients receiving a healthy smile and renewed hope for the future from Smiles Beyond the Bars. She comes from a background of domestic violence throughout her childhood and marriage. After a long tumultuous journey she has turned her life around and came to Smiles seeking to restore her missing teeth. She says, ….. I’m doing everything I can to better myself and be an asset to my community.” She’s committed to paying it forward.

Smiles Beyond the Bars provides the gift of restored smiles to women and men who have experienced domestic violence or incarceration and are committed to rebuilding their lives.

We know you there are many worthy organizations requesting your financial support this holiday season, but we ask you to please consider investing your support in Smiles. Your return will be significant, because by renewing confidence and hope to our deserving recipients, our communities gain tax-paying citizens, see families reunited, and see them paying it forward so others can be so blessed with this gift, as well.

Since Smiles qualifies as for Arizona’s charitable tax deduction, your donation can benefit you while doing good at the same time.

What a wonderful way to make a gift to Smiles in honor of or memory of a loved one…..it will make your heart sing!

We welcome your gift of any amount…..and extend our very warmest wishes for a blessed holiday and New Year. Please be sure to visit www.smilesbeyondthebars.org for stories of Where are They Now….
Thank you,

Linda Parker-Smith
