~Sleep and Anxiety~
It really turns into a question of which came first? The 🐥 or the 🥚? This is a well debated question that relates to sleep and anxiety. If you have have anxiety; how is your sleep? Are there any improvements that you can make to your sleep hygiene that will help lessen your anxiety throughout the day? Lessen screen time before bed, avoid caffeine/alcohol late in the day, keep a regular sleep schedule, avoid stressors before bed, among many other suggestions that are out there. Anxiety can last all day and lead you to lay awake and not be able to shut off your brain. It's a vicious cycle but it can be broken! Check out https://adaa.org/understanding-anxiety/related-illnesses/sleep-disorders#:~:text=Anxiety%20causes%20sleeping%20problems%2C%20and,of%20developing%20an%20anxiety%20disorder. to see some helpful information regarding Sleep and Anxiety. Dr. Fry takes the time to look into any anatomical reasons why you may not be getting the best sleep. She will then discuss ways orthodontics can help or discuss other possible referrals if necessary to help treat you as a whole.

Christmas is one of the most exciting holidays of the year! From putting up festive decorations, to baking cookies for Kris Kringle, Christmas is full of holiday cheer around every corner. Regardless of what holiday festivities you have planned for your family, there will likely be decadent baked goods and sugary snacks at every turn. This Christmas, make sure your braces/appliance wearers try to avoid holiday sweets like gingerbread cookies, candy canes, peanut brittle, fudge, and popcorn, as these foods can damage brackets and bend archwires...causing an unwarranted orthodontic emergency!

Some of our favorite Christmas treats on the ‘Nice’ list include:

Hot chocolate
Soft sugar cookies
Brownies
Cupcakes
Strawberry cheesecake
Soft chocolates

Amazing what Myofunctional Therapy can do!

This 39 year old female patient was referred by the orthodontist, Dr. Matt McBride at McBride Orthodontics and was enrolled in the Formal Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy program created by Dr Honor Franklin based on her 43 years of specializing in Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs). No orthodontic treatment has been initiated yet. Notice the "spontaneous improvement" in her dental occlusion. As an IAOM Certified Orofacial Myologist, my job is to assist the orthodontist in aligning the teeth and jaw properly and assist in the stabilization of the teeth during and/or after orthodontic treatment.
IMPORTANT NOTE:: Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy never takes the place of orthodontic treatment.

Stop Mouth breathing in children by Patrick McKeown

Why is mouth breathing bad? Take 5 minutes to watch this amazingly informative video put out by the Buteyko Clinic International.
"No child should persistently breathe through an open mouth. It's not harmless. Mouth breathing is probably one of the worst habits that any child can develop. We know that between 25 to 50% of studied children are persistently breathing through an open mouth, both during wakefulness and during sleep. No child reaches their full genetic potential if they are using their mouth to breathe. Why? Find out in this video created by Patrick McKeown, Children Buteyko Instructor."

🎃Halloween is right around the corner!🎃
With all the fun that Halloween can be it is also the most dangerous holiday for our braces and appliance wearers out there!😬
👿BEWARE of the gooey, sticky, hard, and sugary candies we love to indulge in during Halloween. They can easily get stuck in archwires, break brackets, and corrode tooth enamel, putting both your braces and the health of your teeth in jeopardy, which is truly a scary thought! Avoid those kinds of candies and increasing your brushing will help keep you on top of your treatment.

Shared from The Breathe Institute:

Why do we compensate?
Some individuals have learned to compensate by incorporating other muscles of the orofacial region (i.e. cheek, lip, and neck areas) in an attempt to perform the basic functions of breathing, chewing, and swallowing. This learned behavior leads to dysfunction and various disorders, known as compensatory behaviors.
Ideally, the muscles of the orofacial region should work in concert with each other, not as substitutes for one another. Every muscle and organ we have is specifically designed for a purpose. Inter-muscle relationships must be clearly defined, with each muscle performing its discrete function. Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is not simply a regimen of exercises and stretches, but ultimately it is about being able to breathe, chew, and swallow efficiently. #MyoMondays

BOARD CERTIFIED ORTHODONTIST

What does it mean to be Board Certified?

Dr. Fry has taken a “step beyond” most orthodontists to become certified by the American Board of Orthodontics. Certification is voluntary and means that an orthodontist has successfully completed a rigorous examination of his or her skills, knowledge and expertise. When Dr. Fry took the exam, she had to submit her own patient cases and passed successfully in 2017 on the quality of the finished result. Currently, approximately 30% of Michigan orthodontists are board certified.

By choosing Fry Integrative Orthodontics you have entrusted your care to someone who sought out and met the highest standard of excellence in orthodontics. Dr. Fry’s commitment to this excellence translates into the highest standard of care for you!
