Does your child get canker sores? While anyone at any age can get a canker sore, they seem to occur more frequently in children. Canker sores are small sores in the mouth that pop up as the result of trauma to the mouth, certain diseases, or genetics. Unlike cold sores, canker sores aren’t contagious.

Canker sores generally clear up on their own, but they can be very painful. An antimicrobial mouthwash and a numbing topical agent can reduce the duration and discomfort. However, if the sore does not seem to be improving after a couple of weeks, get in touch with us immediately.

Q: What should I do if my child has bad breath?

A: Bad breath (halitosis) can be an unpleasant and embarrassing condition. In healthy kids, the major reason is due to microbial deposits on the tongue. Teaching your kids to brush their tongue while brushing their teeth can reduce bad breath by as much as 70 percent.

If the bad breath persists, schedule an appointment with us. It may be a symptom of an underlying condition.

Your baby’s teeth are important. This month we asked Dr. White three questions you should know about keeping your baby’s teeth healthy.

1. What is the most common question you get from patients about maintaining healthy baby teeth?

A lot of parents ask what kind of toothpaste is best to brush their child’s teeth. It used to be recommended to use a fluoride-free toothpaste until age 3. However, that recommendation has changed. It is now recommended to use a smear or a rice-grain amount to brush the teeth of children 3 and younger. Children older than 3 should use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. We also recommend for parents to help their children brush their teeth to at least age 7.

2. What do you want parents to know about the importance of keeping baby teeth free of decay?

Baby teeth are very important to your child’s health and development. They help us chew, speak and smile. Decay on these baby teeth can cause many problems, such as pain, difficulty eating, and risk of infection. They also hold space for the permanent teeth that are developing under them. If a baby tooth is lost too early, the teeth around it can drift into the empty space and make it difficult for other adult teeth to have enough room when they come in.

3. How old should a baby be when he/she sees a dentist for the first time

We recommend a baby see a dentist for the first time by their first birthday.
