Want to disinfect your toothbrush? You can soak it in an antibacterial mouthwash for 30 seconds. For a homemade alternative, mix 2 teaspoons of baking soda in a cup of water.

With social distancing in full effect, it is more important than ever to practice good oral hygiene and prevent cavities. Remind your family about brushing and flossing twice a day. Using an antibacterial mouthwash is also a good precaution.

Hope your weekend was filled with hope and renewal! Happy Monday

Friendship!

Each day Dr. Amundson and I head into work and follow up on voicemails, emails and calling patients to hear their story. These are lonely days for me, as the people we care for are my friends.

I’d like to share a conversation from yesterday with a dear friend that I’ve known for almost 32 years. She has been sheltering in place for over two weeks and working from home. She had mentioned how lonely it felt, and yet shared all of the goodness in her days, too. Her son’s wife has been grocery shopping for her and leaving them on her doorstep while he has been bringing the grandchildren by, stopping in her driveway so they could wave to each other through the windows. And when she was taking the garbage out the other day, she heard a beautiful noise. It was a huge, loud garbage truck lumbering through to do their best to keep our community clean! She was in awe of the beauty and noise surrounding her while keeping herself safe from the Coronavirus. When she told me about her grandchildren, we both wept together and realized all the blessings we have in our lives. She is one of my cherished blessings and she brightened my day. Have you brightened someone’s day?

When this craziness is over, we will rejoice in each other’s presence and give thanks.

We wish everyone a hopeful and renewing Easter!

Kim

We’ve been caring for our community since 1988 and value the trust and friendship we share. Our experiences of the Aids epidemic from the early 90’s to the Big Big Flood of 1997, have helped us grow and become stronger than before. We are optimistic and hopeful that by standing together and practicing “shelter in place”, we will come through this experience too.

Remember to practice proper hygiene, get plenty of rest and eat a healthy diet to help yourself combat this virus. Take care, stay safe and healthy! We will see you soon.

The History and Mythology of the tooth fairy

While the last baby teeth generally aren’t lost until age ten or 11, most children stop believing in the tooth fairy by the time they're seven or eight. Of course, children are more than happy to play along with the game when there’s money at stake! While it is impossible to know what the tooth fairy does with all those teeth (are they labeled and stored like museum pieces in a giant fairytale castle?), it is possible to trace the history and myth of the tooth fairy to several cultures and traditions.

The Middle Ages

Legend has it that Europeans in the Middle Ages believed a witch could curse someone by using their teeth, so it was important to dispose of baby teeth correctly. Teeth were swallowed, buried, or burned. Sometimes baby teeth were even left for rodents to eat. Despite being pests, rodents were valued for their strong teeth; it was generally believed a tooth fed to a rodent would lead to the development of a healthy and strong adult tooth.

Eighteenth Century France

The tooth fairy myth began to show more characteristics of a conventional fairytale in 18th century France. La Bonne Petite Souris, a bedtime story, tells the strange tale of a fairy that changes into a mouse to help a good queen defeat an evil king. The mouse secretly hides under the evil king’s pillow and defeats him by knocking out his teeth.

Scandinavian Lore

So, why does the tooth fairy leave money under the pillow? The idea of exchanging a tooth for coins originated in Scandinavia. Vikings paid children for a lost tooth. Teeth were worn on necklaces as good luck charms in battle. While the idea of exchanging a tooth for coins quickly spread throughout the rest of Europe, a fierce, horn-helmeted Viking is far cry from the image of a fairy collecting teeth.

While the tooth fairy as children know her today didn’t make an appearance until the 1900s, tooth myths and rites of passage have existed in numerous cultures since the dawn of time.

Good Dental Hygiene Gives You Better Overall Health
