[02/24/12]   Now something for adults. Are you diabetic or have family history of diabetes?

The other day I had a patient with diabetes. My Mother-in-law is diabetic and suffered serious dental problems (ofcourse before I met her daughter!). I am glad I could take care of both - my patient and Mother-in-law.

Diabetes puts you at risk for dental problems. It impairs your ability to fight bacteria in your mouth. Having high blood sugar encourages bacteria to grow and contributes to gum disease. Gum disease may lead to :
•Gums that are red, sore, bleeding, or swollen, or that pull away from your teeth
•Loose teeth
•Chronic bad breath

You can follow 4 simple steps that ensure a healthy mouth also help you manage your diabetes.
•Eat a healthy diet.
•Don't smoke.
•Keep up with your diabetes medications.
•See your dentist regularly to reduce your risk of developing a serious problem

[02/24/12]   February is children dental health care month. Are your children brushing and flossing as you want them to?

The "me do" stage poses a challenge when it comes to providing your kids with the necessary instruction tooth brushing and flossing requires. Here are some tips that can help:

1. Brush together, taking turns to brush each others teeth.
2. You can never go wrong with their favorite cartoon character brush and may be 3. sing a theme song from the same cartoon or a nursery rhyme while you brush their teeth.
4. Use syllables like “ahhhh” or “eeeeeee” to help your child open their mouth or move their lips away from their teeth while brushing.

[12/08/11]   How to find your oral health care partner?

You and your dentist will be long-term oral health care partners; therefore, you should find someone you can be comfortable with. You should consider the following before choosing your dentist:

•What are the office hours? Are they convenient for your schedule?
•Is the office easy to get to from work or home?
•Where was the dentist educated and trained?
•What's the dentist's approach to preventive dentistry?
•How often does the dentist attend conferences and continuing education workshops?
•What type of anesthesia is the dentist certified to administer to help you relax and feel more comfortable during any necessary dental treatment?
•What arrangements are made for handling emergencies outside of office hours? (Most dentists make arrangements with a colleague or emergency referral service if they are unable to tend to emergencies.)
•Is information provided about all fees and payment plans before treatment is scheduled? If you are comparison shopping, ask for estimates on some common procedures such as full-mouth X-rays, an oral exam and cleaning, and filling a cavity.
•Does the dentist participate in your dental health plan?
•What is the dentist's office policy on missed appointments?

At Windsor Signature Smiles where your comfort is our top priority, we ensure that you get answers to all your questions that will help you make an informed decision.
