HAVE YOU EVER wondered the difference between implants and veneers? 🤔 Implants are man-made tooth roots inserted into the jawbone to replace your natural tooth while veneers are only put on the front surface of your natural teeth to improve the look of your smile. #implants #veneers #smile

SMALL, FIBROUS DISKS act as cushions between the ball and socket of our jaw joints, and if something goes wrong with that disk like it eroding or shifting out of proper alignment, or if arthritis wears away the cartilage on the bone or there’s a traumatic injury to the joint, the result could be a TMJ disorder. These are more common in adults, but kids can get them too.

Common symptoms of a TMJ disorder include clicking, popping, or grating in the joint, pain or tenderness of the jaw, pain in one or both of the joints, difficult or painful chewing, aching pain around the face or ear, and difficulty opening or closing the jaw. 😬

There are a few ways to reduce TMJ pain. Avoid yawning if possible, or control a yawn with a fist pressed beneath the jaw. Keep extreme jaw movements to a minimum (such as when singing or yawning). 🗣Remember that the jaw’s natural resting position is with the teeth slightly apart, not all the way closed. Eat more soft foods that don’t need much chewing.

Most TMJ pain is temporary and will go away on its own before too long, but some requires treatment. Treatment can vary from simple measures like ice packs, exercise, and moist heat to more complex solutions like medication and splints, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), ultrasound treatment, or trigger-point injections. Jaw surgery may be recommended if all else fails, and orthodontic treatment can help if the cause is related to jaw alignment. 👍#TMJ #TMJAwarenessMonth #JawPain

KIDS LOVE SUGAR, but so does the harmful bacteria that causes cavities, which feasts on the residue that remains in the mouth after eating a sugary treat. Every time we eat something sugary or acidic, it takes thirty minutes for our saliva to wash everything away. 👅How can parents fight back? Swap out some of those sugary snack foods with fruits and veggies and try to limit sugar consumption to mealtimes.

Fruit juice might seem like a healthy alternative to soda, but it has just as much sugar and is nearly as acidic. Not even milk is sugar-free! Sugary drinks are especially dangerous to teeth when kids have sippy cups or bottles to sip on them constantly. When they do this, their teeth are continuously bathed in sugar.

The risk of decay in this situation is so high that it’s earned its own nicknames: “bottle rot” or “baby bottle tooth decay.” 🍼So just like with sugary treats, we recommend cutting back on sugary drinks and especially limiting them to mealtimes. For between meals and close to bedtime, water is a much better option to put in the sippy cup.

Aside from limiting sugar intake to mealtimes and generally cutting back on it, there are plenty of other ways to help a child have a cavity-free smile. 😃One is to be a good example of proper dental hygiene habits and to teach them to have those habits too. #sugar #OralHealth #ToothDecay

TIKTOK IS FULL of popular trends, but “popular” does not always mean “healthy,” particularly when the trends are about DIY dental procedures. Here are a few of the dangerous trends we’ve spotted:

DIY bleaching: we’ve seen TikTokers using 3% hydrogen peroxide to whiten their own teeth. This can easily cause long-term sensitivity and gum irritation (not to mention uneven results), and it’s not a safe way to cheaply achieve the same outcome as with professional whitening treatments. 🚫

Filing teeth: some TikTok videos show teens and young adults taking nail files to the chewing surfaces of their teeth to try to make them look straighter. They are permanently removing their tooth enamel and they risk fracturing their teeth, causing tooth sensitivity, and getting infections. 😬 Only dental professionals have the training and tools to file teeth safely.

Homemade Braces: another dangerous trend we've seen on TikTok is teens trying to correct their own orthodontic problems using everyday items like rubber bands. DO NOT DO THIS. At best, it won't work and will need to be corrected by a professional. At worst, it could turn out the way it did for David Campbell. The rubber bands he used seemed to be disappearing at night, but really they were slipping under his gums, where they strangled the roots of his teeth. The teeth could not be saved. 😞#TikTokTrends #DentalTrends #WhatNotToDo
