Jess T's Story:
My name is Jess T. Since I have been a client at Mobile Hope, I have met a lot of tremendous supporters. I was asked to share my story with you, so you know who you are helping.
My story is a journey – deep breath – here goes. 22 years ago, I was dealt a really poor hand of cards in the game of life. I have made some really poor choices that caused me to lose what little fortune that hand had given me. My hope now, is that by telling my story, I can help others realize that even when you mess up a hand, you can always be dealt back into the game of life.
My life started off rough. I had to be removed from my biological parents at 18 months. I was adopted at the age of 5. I stayed with that family until I was 12, then they returned me to Foster Care due to my “issues”. I wish I could say that life got better, but no. After being placed with many different foster families, entering treatment facilities, psych wards and two more failed adoptions, I was sent to the Youth Shelter. I was in my senior year of High School. The Shelter was not horrible, but it caused its’ fair share of problems. Like – my grades dropped, I developed a terrible attitude, and just did not feel like trying – especially in the Emergency Medical Technician class I was taking at Monroe.
Then…I turned 18, and I had to leave the Shelter. But…a foster family wanted me to live with them! Off I went. They were great. My grades improved. They even helped me so much that I lettered in Track & Field in the shot put, and I graduated from high school! Next stop – NOVA. I went there for two semesters. Since things were going along so well, I decided to leave the foster family and move in with my brother to be more independent. Life was great, and I was maintaining a good course for about a year.
I should have stayed on that track, but I met a guy. I moved in with him. It was not long before he began to be abusive. I started to miss work because I was not able to hide the bruises. I even dropped out of NOVA. I stayed with this guy for about 6 months. After I left, I started self-harming and was feeling suicidal and so worthless. I decided to commit myself. Once I got out, I went back to live with my brother. It was not long before my amazing Case Worker called to say that she was able to place me in an Independent Living facility in Manassas. I wish it could have been in Loudoun, but there is no such place here. I was so happy there and doing well – then the reality of turning the magical age of 21 hit!! I had to leave that facility too. No celebration for turning 21 for me. I had to find a new place to live and a new job.
Miraculously, my amazing caseworker swooped in and found a place for me to stay with another foster family. This time, I was able to live with them for 4 months before I felt I had to leave them due to some major issues as a result to personality differences. Again – there I am – alone. I had $100. I reached to some friends and this time I was given their couch to at least sleep on. As I am sure you can tell – I was moving around A LOT. I had no one. I never seemed to cut a break. What did I decide to do…I turned to steal. I was arrested. I got a wee bit lucky and was given community service as a punishment. The good news…my probation officer suggested that I perform by community service at Mobile Hope.
While I was performing my community service the incredible staff at Mobile Hope became my friends. Man - they listened. They seemed to care about ME. I began to open up and explained – as best as I could – what was up with me. I told them everything. They still listened. They have helped me in so many ways. Was I a challenge – yes. Did I test them – yes. Did they give up – no. I know I disappointed them on several occasions. After a few major failures (or as Mobile Hope says – set-backs) on my part – they had no choice, but to sit me down basically telling me – that the only one that could change was me. They were tough. That shook me up. Finally, the light went on in my head. Now, it was my turn to listen. The YES Team (the Mobile Hope volunteer staff that runs the Youth Employment Services program) helped me find the documents I needed to find a job. They guided me in a direction to find a job. They drove me to job interviews. They helped me with suitable clothes. All in all, Mobile Hope provided me with food, tips to prepare and cook a meal, they put me in a hotel until we were able to find housing. Finally, I was able to go to the Homeless Shelter.
Today, I have two jobs. I am renting a room in an apartment. I am going slow. Maybe I will be able to go back to school. Right now, I am taking things one day at a time.
I want you to know how thankful I am for Mobile Hope and my friends there. They are truly good people whose only goal is to help others through no gain of their own. With their consistent support and encouragement, I realized that even though I will continue to struggle for a while, if I start to play smarter and plan with more caution - I can march forward and show others like me that good people do exist, and a few bad choices don’t have to define the rest of your life. My struggles should be a sign and proof that good things happen, but it is all about how you play the hand you are dealt.
