Gingivitis is caused by plaque and bacteria that sits on the teeth and irritates the gums and causes the gums to turn red or purple, swelling, and bleeding. If gingivitis is ignored, it will progress into periodontal disease which can cause irreversible damage to your gums and bone!

Other factors that impact gum disease are smoking, alcohol consumption, foods like popcorn, clenching or grinding, misaligned teeth, poorly done fillings, diabetes, and pregnancy.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential to stop gingivitis BEFORE it turns into a more serious issue. Brushing twice a day making sure that all the plaque along the gum line is removed, and flossing at least once a day to remove anything that is suck in between the teeth.

[03/08/20]   Happy daylight savings! Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour 🕑

“Even though they are temporary, your child's baby teeth are important, and are still susceptible to cavities. Tooth decay in infants and toddlers is often referred to as Baby Bottle Tooth Decay, or Early Childhood Caries. Children need strong, healthy teeth to chew their food, speak and have a good-looking smile. Their first teeth also help make sure their adult teeth come in correctly. It’s important to start infants off with good oral care to help protect their teeth for decades to come.”

Sometimes brushing and flossing isn’t enough to protect your teeth against decay. Each tooth has a unique shape and our molar teeth can have deep groves and pits in them which makes it easy for food and bacteria to get stuck, and will lead to eventual decay if not removed. Children more often than adults have a hard time brushing and flossing these areas to keep them clean.

Sealants are a thin protective material that is placed on the chewing surface of the tooth that will fill in the deep groves and pits in the teeth. This helps prevent bacteria and food from getting stuck in the teeth in areas that are hard to reach with a toothbrush.

Sealants are best to get when you are young and your permanent molars have come in (usually around 6). Placing sealants as soon as the break through the gum is the best way to keep them cavity free!

Ask us at your next dental cleaning if you are a good candidate for sealants! 😁🦷

[02/02/20]   Happy Super Bowl Sunday everyone! Who are you rooting for?

02/01/2020

Did you know that every year children miss 51 MILLION school hours because of tooth decay? 😱

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month 🦷. Tooth decay is the most common disease in children. But, this is almost completely PREVENTABLE with proper home care and regular dental visits. Even though baby teeth eventually fall out, it is important to keep them healthy because they are the blueprint for the permanent teeth! Children do not have the dexterity to properly brush their teeth until they can tie their own shoes. So, it is important to help brush their teeth for two minutes twice a day and start flossing as soon as the teeth start to touch.

Remember, developing a good heath care routine at an early age and regular visits to the dentist helps children get a jumpstart to a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums!
