COVID-19 Vaccine Q&A | Arlington County | May 20, 2021

Governor Northam has issued Executive Order 72 which goes into effect on May 28. The order no longer requires masks for fully vaccinated individuals in most indoor settings. However, this order does not apply to health care facilities so we are still requiring the use of masks in our offices. In line with this guidance and to ensure the safety of all our patients and staff we will continue with our emergency measures. These include requiring patients to fill out a health questionnaire prior to their visit, taking temperatures upon entry to the office, limiting the number of people in the office and non-patients in treatment areas. We ask for your understanding and cooperation in our efforts to keep everyone safe.
thank you,

One of the most effective ways to get kids to brush regularly is to establish a regular bedtime routine. Having a pattern means that as much as possible, doing the same thing every night. Your routine might be something simple as taking a bath, brushing your teeth, and reading a book. Kids (and adults!) thrive when they know what to expect. Establishing regular habits when children are young is the best way to prepare them for a lifetime of oral health

Like the eyelashes on your face, tastebuds on your tongue regrow themselves! The lifespan of a tastebud is roughly ten days. Tastebuds will lose their sensitivity and regenerate new ones, or often tastebuds will die because of the hot foods we tend to eat.

When your child skips flossing, they miss cleaning 30% of the surface of their teeth! Many cavities get their start in areas that a toothbrush simply cannot reach. In addition to brushing for two minutes, twice every day, don’t forget to help your children floss! :)

One of the essential steps in a lifetime of healthy smiles begins with a positive experience at a pediatric dental office. Parents can help by making an upcoming visit feel like a fun adventure. Avoid passing along your own dental fear by avoiding words like “shot,” drill,” “needle,” or “pain.” Stay positive, and it’s more likely that your child will too!

Good oral health begins earlier than you may think! Before teeth emerge, use a soft cloth to wipe your baby's gums gently. As the first tooth appears (usually around eight months), you can use a fingertip toothbrush or one with a small head, and soft bristles explicitly made for babies. Choose infant toothpaste and only use a light smear – about the size of a grain of rice.

Apples are a dental SUPERFOOD! They are packed with fiber, which stimulates gums and gently scrubs teeth to remove plaque. Apples also stimulate saliva production, which naturally cleans teeth by rinsing away food particles and cavity-causing bacteria. And they’re packed with vitamin C without the acidity of many citrus fruits. Plus, children who are teething often find apples to be soothing. (Don’t forget to supervise to avoid choking concerns.) And always choose whole apples over apple sauce whenever possible.

From the awkward angle to the spacing between their teeth, it can be difficult for you to floss your child’s teeth and they may lack the dexterity to do so themselves. Dental tape is a great solution for young flossers, especially when teeth are widely spaced. Dental tape is wide and flat and designed to be gentle on exposed gums. The width of dental tape makes it easier for small hands to grasp it and makes it more forgiving when children use too much pressure while flossing. A thinner, waxed floss is better at getting into tight spaces, and plastic flossers may be used in hard-to-reach areas. We encourage you to use whatever works best to promote daily flossing. Feel free to ask for pointers at your next visit!

Children typically don’t have the dexterity to brush their own teeth until they can tie their shoes, usually somewhere around 5 years of age. Until then, you should continue to assist them in brushing. We’ve found that it’s best to allow your child to brush on their own, and then a parent can step in to help. Even after your child can brush unassisted, it is still a good idea to keep a watchful eye to ensure they are brushing correctly and long enough.

Is an electric toothbrush better than a conventional one? Research is mixed and some electric brushes are better than others. However, if you have trouble motivating your child to brush, a good way to get your kids (or you!) excited about brushing is to try an electric toothbrush! Most child electric toothbrushes have a built-in two-minute timer along with other fun features to make brushing something they look forward to.

You should buy a new toothbrush for your child every three months or sooner if bristles become frayed. When choosing the best toothbrush for your child, there are a few things to look for: 1. Make sure that the toothbrush is the right size for your child. The handle should fit in their hand, and the head should easily fit in their mouth. 2. Look for the ADA seal of approval. 3. Make sure that you buy a toothbrush with soft, rounded bristles and avoid those marked medium or hard.

One of the easiest and most effective ways that kids (and adults) can reduce cavities is simply by replacing sugared drinks with water. In fact, many early cavities that we see are likely caused by easy access to juice and soda. Even when diluted, juice can provide the sugars that cavity-causing bacteria need to thrive. Drink more water! 😊

The term “milk teeth” is sometimes used as another word for bay teeth. Also called primary, or deciduous teeth, they typically emerge fully by 2.5 to 3 years of age and are replaced by permanent teeth between the ages of 6 and 12. Since they are temporary, are they important? YES! Your child’s baby teeth help permanent teeth to align properly, assist in speech, provide for correct jaw alignment, and are a big factor in a child’s overall self-esteem.
