Brush up on how to care for your teeth with these tips from dentists

As more Americans return to dental offices, practitioners say they’re seeing a significant rise in tooth-grinding and jaw-clenching, probably brought on by pandemic-related stress and anxiety. They’re also seeing an increase in cavities and gum disease that may be due to a combination of lapsed appointments, pandemic eating and drinking habits, and less-than-stellar brushing and flossing.

Brush up on how to care for your teeth with these tips from dentists Dentists say they’ve seen an increase in tooth-grinding, cavities and periodontal disease in patients who are returning for checkups.

Teeth grinding, also called bruxism, is a common condition in which an someone clenches or grinds their teeth. With an estimated prevalence rate among adults between 8% to 31.4%, you may grind your teeth at night and not be aware of it! While the cause of the condition is not always clear, the effects can be uncomfortable, including jaw pain, tooth damage, and headaches. Using this scanner is a great diagnostic tool to help us monitor recession and determine the effects from clenching and grinding. This will help us determine if a night guard is necessary.

Your teeth aren’t tools. Often, people come into our office with a chipped or broken tooth because they’ve decided to use their teeth in order to open bottles, wrappers, bags, etc.

While using your teeth can sometimes seem like a quick and easy way to get the job done, it can also do a significant amount of damage if something goes wrong. Your teeth are for chewing food; don’t use them for anything else! Be careful.

Ho**ah smoking takes its toll on oral health in four key ways:

Periodontal disease: It’s estimated that cigarette smokers are nearly 4 times more likely than non-smokers to develop periodontal disease. Some research suggests that ho**ah smokers are up to 5 times more likely than non-smokers to develop periodontal disease.

Bad breath: As we noted above, an hour-long group ho**ah session can consist of taking up to 200 puffs. Keep in mind that to***co and bad breath are pretty synonymous with each other – even if it’s flavored and smells and tastes nice. Hence, the more to***co you consume, the worse off your breath will be.

Oral cancer: Up to 42,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer each year. To***co is believed to be a major factor in such diagnoses, no matter how it is consumed. The juices from ho**ahs can lead to irritation of the mouth, which can help accelerate the onset of oral cancer.

Dry mouth: Last but not least, dry mouth is another common effect from ho**ah smoking. Any type of to***co consumption will inhibit the mouth’s ability to produce saliva. This, in turn, can leave the mouth at greater risk for tooth decay.
