Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, when on June 19th, 1865 the Union Army informed slaves in Galveston, Texas of their emancipation. They were some of the last slaves to be freed, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Just this year Juneteenth has just been made a federal holiday, and New Dimensions in Health Care joins in celebrating the spirit of the day and the richness of African American culture!

New Dimensions in Health Care (NDHC) would like to recognize Heidi Van Deusen during #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth. 💚

Heidi is a Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry (NPP) at NDHC, providing mental health care services to individuals who receive supports through Liberty ARC.

“Mental health is not separate from total health,” Heidi said. “We have as much a responsibility to care for our brains as we do for our bodies. There are many, many ways to achieve this.”

Heidi uses several methods of treatment during her sessions with her patients, including the most common – talk therapy and medication management.

Sand tray therapy is another practice Heidi uses. This method allows people to tell their story with a small box of white sand using little figurines. The scenes created are not only a reflection of one’s life, but it gives participants an opportunity to remove obstacles, resolve conflict, and gain confidence.

For Heidi, the most rewarding part of her job is being able to witness a patient doing better in their life because of the work they have done together to get them to that point.

“Treatment is a partnership – accomplished between the work on the part of the patient them self, and teamwork with the entire team,” Heidi said.

Thank you, Heidi, for the positive impact you have made and continue to make on so many lives.

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. So did you know…

Oral cancer can be found in the mouth itself, the back of the mouth, which is called oropharynx, and on the exterior lips of the mouth.

Around 54,000 people in the United States will be newly diagnosed in 2021 with about 43% not living past five years. One person in America will die every day because of oral cancer.

The most common risk factors for oral cancer include to***co use and high alcohol consumption. The biggest cause of “back of the mouth” cancer is the HPV-16 virus.

Signs and Symptoms of Oral Cancer include:

~A sore in the mouth that has not healed within 14 days.

~A hard spot, usually found on the boarder of the tongue.

~A constant cough that lasts for many days, or a sore throat that is not gone within a few weeks.

~Discoloration of the soft tissues of the mouth.

~Difficulty swallowing foods with a feeling it is caught in your throat.

There is no better time than the month of April to visit your dentist for an oral cancer examination and to make them a routine part of your dental check-ups. New Dimensions in Health Care is accepting new dental patients. Please contact them at (518) 843-2575 to set up an appointment.

Glorian Sostre, Medical Office Clerk at New Dimensions in Health Care (NDHC), recently received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. She chose to get vaccinated for the safety of NDHC patients and her family.

"I decided to get the vaccine for the safety of my family," Glorian said. "I put my father's health first due to his heart and lung conditions and his diabetes and disability. I would not want to almost lose him for a second due to not being careful or smart. My mom was another factor in my decision as well because of her health and I also wanted to keep my daughter safe because she is the world to me. And I also understood the benefits this would have for our patients, and I wanted to do my part to keep them safe from this virus too."

Sherri Wolfe, a dental hygienist at New Dimensions in Health Care, recently received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccination.

"I got my vaccine even though it was pushed through the FDA quickly because I want to get back to 'normal,'" Sherri said. "I was initially hesitant because long-term side effects were unknown, but my mom put it to me this way: when she was growing up polio was a big issue and if they had waited to see the long-term results of the vaccine, how many more would have had polio? No one wants to have any side effects, but do we wait another 10 years to see if there are any long-term side effects of the COVID vaccine? And as a result, do we see how many more individuals die or have long-term effects from having COVID? Or do we get vaccinated and keep each other safe and go back to a sense of normal? I prefer keeping those around me safe."
