[For updated guidance, see 8/21 posting]

The National Weather Service (NWS) earlier today issued guidance about Hurricane Henri, potential impacts across Massachusetts, including Western Massachusetts, and what you should be doing NOW to prepare. Here you go:

This statement covers Southern New England

- A Hurricane Watch is in effect for Western Kent RI
- A Storm Surge Watch and Hurricane Watch are in effect for
Barnstable MA, Block Island RI, Bristol RI, Dukes MA, Eastern
Kent RI, Nantucket MA, Newport RI, Southern Bristol MA,
Southern Plymouth MA, and Washington RI

- About 770 miles south-southwest of Nantucket MA
- 30.4N 73.7W
- Storm Intensity 65 mph
- Movement Northwest or 305 degrees at 7 mph

Tropical Storm Henri is forecast to strengthen to a hurricane by tomorrow morning as it heads northward today, and is expected to make landfall near Newport RI Sunday evening, as a strong Tropical Storm or possibly as a Category 1 hurricane. Henri will weaken rapidly after landfall but will exit the region slowly through Monday. The main hazards include damaging winds, flooding rain, and storm surge flooding.

Prepare for life-threatening wind having possible extensive impacts across south coastal Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Potential impacts in this area include:
- Considerable roof damage to sturdy buildings, with some having window, door, and garage door failures leading to structural damage.
- Mobile homes severely damaged, with some destroyed.
- Damage accentuated by airborne projectiles. Locations may be uninhabitable for weeks.
- Many large trees snapped or uprooted along with fences and roadway signs blown over.
- Some roads impassable from large debris, and more within urban or heavily wooded places. Several bridges, causeways, and access routes impassable.
- Large areas with power and communications outages.

Prepare for life-threatening surge having possible significant impacts across south coastal Rhode Island and Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the Islands. Potential impacts in this area include:
- Areas of inundation with storm surge flooding accentuated by waves. Damage to several buildings, mainly near the coast.
- Sections of near-shore escape routes and secondary roads become weakened or washed out, especially in usually vulnerable low spots.
- Major beach erosion with heavy surf breaching dunes. Strong and numerous rip currents.
- Moderate damage to marinas, docks, boardwalks, and piers.
- Several small craft broken away from moorings, especially in unprotected anchorages.

Also, prepare for locally hazardous surge having possible limited impacts along the eastern Massachusetts coastline, north of Sagamore Beach to the Merrimack River.

- Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt several evacuations and rescues.
- Rivers and tributaries may quickly become swollen with swifter currents and overspill their banks in a few places, especially in usually vulnerable spots. Small streams, creeks, and ditches overflow.
- Flood waters can enter some structures or weaken foundations.
- Several places may experience expanded areas of rapid inundation at underpasses, low-lying spots, and poor drainage areas. Some streets and parking lots take on moving water as storm drains and retention ponds overflow. Driving conditions become hazardous. Some road and bridge closures.

Listen to local official for recommended preparedness actions, including possible evacuation. If ordered to evacuate, do so immediately.

Now is the time to check your emergency plan and emergency supplies kit and take necessary actions to protect your family and secure your home or business.

When making safety and preparedness decisions, do not focus on the exact forecast track since hazards such as flooding rain, damaging wind gusts, storm surge, and tornadoes extend well away from the center of the storm.

If you are a visitor, know the name of the county in which you are located and where it is relative to current watches and warnings. If staying at a hotel, ask the management staff about their onsite disaster plan. Listen for evacuation orders, especially pertaining to area visitors.

Closely monitor, NOAA Weather Radio and local news outlets for official storm information. Listen for possible changes to the forecast.

Baystate Health is holding Community COVID-19 Town Halls 🩺🩺

[03/30/21]   On behalf of our patients, staff and the communities we serve, HCHC would like to express our sincere appreciation to Congressman Jim McGovern for tireless advocacy on behalf of the Second Congressional District!

We recognize that your fight for health center resources in the American Rescue Plan Act resulted in game-changing investments for HCHC.

This funding will allow us to meet the moment with vaccine distribution, health equity, and building vax confidence. This support will help to strengthen health center infrastructure and increase our capacity to serve the community for years to come.

You have gone above and beyond for health centers in your district and for that, we thank you.

Massachusetts has launched a Vaccine Scheduling Resource Line to assist individuals ages 75 and older who are unable to use or have difficulty accessing the internet to schedule a COVID-19 vaccine appointment online.

***Call 2-1-1 and follow prompts to reach the Massachusetts Vaccine Scheduling Resource Line***
Hours of Operations: Monday to Friday 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM

More information, here and below:

The Massachusetts Vaccine Scheduling Resource Line is available in English and Spanish and will have translators available to support residents in approximately 100 additional languages. Individuals ages 75 and older will be able to speak to a representative live on the phone to assist them with an appointment through the state’s online system. These representatives have the same access to appointments as on the public website; it will not give individuals access to additional appointments. If no appointments are available, callers will have the option to be placed on a call back list for the mass vaccination sites. The caller will receive a call back when an appointment becomes available for them at a mass vaccination site, and the list will be called on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Massachusetts Vaccine Scheduling Resource Line is currently only for individuals ages 75 and older who cannot use or have difficulty accessing the internet and therefore are unable to schedule an appointment through the online platforms. The Massachusetts Vaccine Scheduling Resource Line is only able to support individuals with scheduling an appointment and representatives are not able to answer general questions about COVID-19 or provide individual health care advice.

Please note that currently, there is a high demand and limited vaccine supply. When folks connect with a live person via the hotline, there may not be an appointment available. If this is the case, folks will be placed on a callback list and will receive further outreach when an appointment becomes available.

This hotline is only for eligible individuals 75 & older. Calls to the hotline on behalf of individuals under age 75 will only delay service and appointment scheduling assistance.

The next cohorts that will become open for vaccines are those 65+ and individuals living with two or more CDC-defined certain medical conditions listed as at increased risk. Our office will communicate when those priority cohorts can sign up for their vaccines.

If you use this hotline for vaccine help, I invite you to share your feedback and experience so I can work with state officials to improve this service. 02/05/2021
