Dear Families of Aiea Pediatric Dental Center,
We hope this letter finds you and your family in good health. Everyone has been through so much over the last few months (especially our children!) and although we look forward to resuming our normal habits and routines, it may take some time. Our office has been closed since March 16th and we are planning to reopen on July 15th (unless you are experiencing a dental emergency, please call the office after this date).
Our #1 commitment is your family’s health. We have done a renovation that included replacing all of the carpet with hard flooring, which allows us to sanitize the floors daily. We have placed air purifiers with medical grade filters in each of our 10 operatory/cleaning rooms. Our office will also be equipped with “Extra oral suction devices “ to assist in reducing aerosols. We are fortunate to have 2 solea dental laser machines, which will minimize aerosols during filling procedures. These are just a few of the many steps we have taken to protect your children while being at our office.
Our staff may be calling to schedule or confirm your existing appointments. You may notice incoming calls with a “private “ or “unknown” caller ID because some of our staff will be using their personal cell phones. When we reopen, we will be offering “teledentistry services” which is a secured video/chat app (like facetime/zoom) that can eliminate visits to our office. This works great for emergency toothaches, trauma or when a permanent tooth is erupting and the baby tooth has not fallen out. The following is an example of how Teledentistry can be used. A 2-year old child hits his/her baby front tooth and parents are concerned about what to do. By doing a video chat in this situation, we can make a similar diagnosis compared to as if you were to come in. **** Teledentistry does require the use of your dental insurance “exam” code and most insurances have a limit of exams per year.
Each dental office currently has the ability to set its own protocols. We have chosen to take the most proactive approach to prevent the spread of disease. Although some of the new protocols may be a little inconvenient, we hope for your understanding and patience. Some of these changes are listed below:
We will ask that you call us from your car when you arrive at our parking lot (808) 488-0100. You will be instructed on what to do. One of our employees meet you outside our office door or at your car.
There will be a short covid-19 screening questionnaire for each appointment. We will be able to send you a link to your cell phone so that you will be able to fill this while in your car
Masks are required to enter our office
If there is any sign or symptom of a cold (cough, runny nose, fever etc) we will need to reschedule your child’s appointment
There will be a temperature check (using a non-contact thermometer) for every staff member and patient/parent who enters our facility
We ask that only one parent accompany their children to his or her appointment and if possible, to only bring children who have a scheduled appointment
We have hand sanitizer that we will ask you to use when you enter the office
For the time being, we will ask parents to wait in their cars during treatment. No one will be allowed to wait in the waiting room.
For those parents with young children, you are most welcome to be with your child during their cleaning appointments
We have removed magazines, children’s toys since those items are difficult to clean and disinfectIf there are any questions or concerns, please call our office once it reopens. We look forward to seeing you again and most of all value your trust and loyalty.
In good oral health,
Derek Tom DDS

Today we celebrate all the wonderful fathers out there! Happy Father's Day!
Always rinse your toothbrush with water after brushing. Also, storing your toothbrush in an upright position will allow it to thoroughly air-dry! #themoreyouknow
Smile Power Day is the perfect excuse to show off your pearly whites!
June is National Fruits and Vegetables Month! Did you know chewing raw fruits and veggies can help stimulate the gums and generate mouth cleansing saliva?
Did you know brushing too hard can damage your tooth enamel and gums? Overbrushing may result in tooth sensitivity, damage to the enamel, and even gum erosion!
MEET OUR STAFF: Cassy is one of our Hygienist who will be taking care of your child the next time you visit us! She is a 2007 graduate from the Dental Hygiene School at UH Manoa- interesting fact: she always wanted to be a hygienist since she was in the 4th grade. Looking forward to seeing all our patients once our office reopens- We Miss You ALL!!
Hi there friends and family! We just wanted to keep you informed on our office closure. Thank you for your patience as we continue to prepare and renovate the office for a safe return. As of today, our target date will be sometime in July. If there are any dental emergencies, please give our office a call. We apologize for the inconvenience that this may have caused some of you, but hope that you understand that our delayed re-opening is for the safety of everyone. Please stay safe and healthy, and don't forget to keep those teeth healthy, too!
It's #NationalDoughnutDay! Don't forget to brush your teeth after enjoying your sweet treat.
When was the last time you replaced your toothbrush? The ADA recommends you do it every three to four months!
Drinking soda every day isn’t just bad for your body, it’s bad for your teeth!
Happy Memorial Day! Let's take a moment to think about all of the brave people who sacrificed so much for our country.
Are you using too much toothpaste? Remember, only a pea-sized amount is necessary!

Happy Friday! #smilemore #worryless #pediatricdentistry #dentalquote
This is a photo of a severe tongue tie. This patient had trouble with speech and swallowing food. After removal of his frenulum patient has no trouble eating and speech has improved dramatically.
This was a case where parents kept telling the pediatrician about the swallowing issues. The only response was that as long as he is gaining weight he'll be ok and he'll outgrow this problem. We performed this procedure in office with our Solea CO2 laser. Actual procedure time is less than 1 minute with no stitches and minimal bleeding. A procedure like this can change your child's life.
Its also important to know that bascially everyone has a frenulum and NOT ALL NEED TO BE REMOVED!!!!! There are others issues that a frenulum can cause and will be discussed at a later time.
I have never been associated with social media in the past. However, with the help of a few of my employees I got this page started. Its my intent to use this venue to educate people about certain topics related to pediatric dentistry and to give my opinions about dentistry.
I have been practicing pediatric dentistry since 2002 and only until a few years ago did i decide to dive in to some different areas of dentistry. Things such as Orthodontics, Laser dentistry and assisting with tongue tie procedures on infants that help with nursing/breastfeeding. I will be talking about these topics in future posts and welcome any questions that people have. For all the mothers, wishing you a beautiful and blessed Mother's Day!
