Did you know that your teeth aren’t bones? While the two may look similar, they are actually very different. Your tooth enamel is much harder than your bones, but it doesn’t contain any living cells. This means that while a broken bone can heal itself over time, you’ll need to visit a dentist to repair a broken tooth!

After you indulge in a decadent meal or delicious glass of wine, your initial reaction may be to brush your teeth immediately after in the name of your oral health. Don’t! Completing your oral hygiene routine so soon can actually damage your enamel. Therefore, wait about 60 minutes before brushing your teeth.

To escape the summer heat, many families choose to spend their days cooling off in the pool. Whether you frequent your community pool or the one in your backyard, it is important to remember that chlorine can break down your enamel after prolonged exposure, resulting in unsightly stains. Therefore, make sure you and your family keep your mouth closed while swimming and rinse with clean water shortly after.

When you bite down, you exert about 200 pounds of pressure. This is essential to breaking down hard foods, like apples or peanut brittle. However, this immense force can be damaging if you grind your teeth at night or accidentally bite down on your tongue while playing sports. That’s why getting a custom mouthguard from your dentist is so important!

The first “toothbrush” was invented 5,000 years ago. At the time, ancient civilizations removed food from their teeth with a “chew stick,” which was a thin twig with a frayed end. Before becoming the nylon-bristled toothbrushes we know today, materials like bone, wood, and ivory were also used!

Is your tongue no longer pink? If a white, filmy layer has collected on the surface, first rinse your mouth with clean water to remove debris, like food particles. From there, use your toothbrush or a tongue scraper to gently clean your tongue from back to front. Make sure to do so multiple times and from different angles for maximum effectiveness.

Our Story

Dr. Frank Michitti isn’t your average dentist in Feeding Hills. In fact, as a child, he had a variety of dental issues that led him to spend more time in the dental chair than he wanted. From there, he has always had a deep sense of empathy for his patients. After graduating from The Ohio State College of Dentistry, Dr. Michitti knew he wanted to open up his own practice—a place where patients could feel relaxed and comfortable.

Even with a strong education, Dr. Michitti went on to earn his Master of the Academy of General Dentistry, a status that less than 2% of dentists in the US and Canada have. His training and experience allow him to offer a wide variety of services like children’s dentistry and dental implants. In fact, he even treats more than just teeth, offering TMJ/TMD therapy to help his patients get out of jaw pain. If you’re ready to experience the difference that quality care can make, contact Lifetime Dental today to get started.
