Thomas S. Browder, DDS

We provide superior dental services to our patients in a relaxed, accommodating atmosphere. Dr. Tom Browder grew up in the quiet countryside of rural Davie County in Advance.

He went to Shady Grove Elementary and then graduated from Davie County High School. From there he went to Wake Forest University where he graduated in 1987. Dr. Browder received his dental education at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. Our mission is to assist you in making informed decisions about your dental health, and give you the highest quality of treatment so you can achieve a long-lasting, healthy smile.

Operating as usual

We don’t often get to see deer on our side of the Bermuda Run fence but this afternoon this doe and fawn decided to say hello. Needless to say, this was not at all lost on Digby who could barely be contained. Either one of them would send him scattering if they even looked his way. (Clyde was oblivious!)

The Dog Days of Summer are here and what better way to celebrate than to welcome the return of Visiting Therapy Dog faculty member Clyde!!! You may remember Clyde, the Bernadoodle from about three years ago when he first visited when only 11 weeks old. Well he’s all grown up now and is normally found at work in Chapel Hill. This week however he will be blessing us with his presence. Here he is with Digby just yesterday as well as during his initial visit three years ago. There is even a snapshot of him helping out his grandmother Jimmie Ruth Pierce. Not to worry - Digby will be along to show Clyde the ropes each day.

I keep telling those of you who can’t believe how calm Digby is at the office that he really can become quite excited. Nothing excites him more than welcoming his favorite person in the world home after being gone for four months. Welcome home Sydney!! Two days is better than nothing I guess.

IT WAS A UFO FOR SURE!!

Over the past several months I have made a concerted effort to not watch, read, or discuss any news or current events. I’m happy to report that “dumb, fat, and happy” is suiting me fairly well. However, my lack of recent events information left me slightly dumbfounded this past Friday morning. I arose before work unusually early and had walked to my utility building that is behind my house. As I walked back toward the house at 5:55 AM, I was stunned to see the sky suddenly light up in a way that I had never seen before. As I looked in the direction of the light, I saw something that I couldn’t quite identify. All kinds of thoughts were running through my mind as to what it was and it was a little scary. I grabbed my phone and took this short video. Later that day I did an internet search of “was there a rocket launch today?” Sure enough, just six minutes prior to this, a rocket had been launched from Cape Canaveral carrying four astronauts from the United States, Japan, and France to the International Space Station. I had no idea that you could actually see something like this from so far away.

I don’t know what strikes me the most about this picture, how young I look or how sweet Hart looks. At any rate, I feel every single one of the 22 years that have passed since then, mostly because of that cute little boy that is sleeping so peacefully beside me there. He was an incredible presence when he entered the world, especially to Deana. The doctor said, “He weighs at least ten pounds” as he handed him to Deana. She almost smacked me. (It’s always my fault!) For the next ten years he would stir at night and Deana would almost always go get him and put him in our bed as she exited to the quite slumber of another room!!! Rarely did I wake in the morning without discovering that I was literally soaked in his sweet baby p*e. Happy Birthday Hart! We sure do love you.

Dr. B made the paper. He's almost as important as the Sudoku!

People have been asking, “Where’s Digby?” He hasn’t gone anywhere but his favorite person has come into town for the holidays which means he spends less time working and more time playing around. He has been coming to work albeit after hours when he and Sydney come to the office to perfect her dental prowess.
We wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Goodbye 2020!!!!!

I thought I would share something that many of you may find uplifting, especially given the climate we are all living in these days. Many of you have heard me talk about how COVID has sent me into the woods. I joke that I have become a modern day Paul Bunyan. Being outside and working in the woods has become an obsession. Earlier today while I was still at work, Deana and Hart took a walk through one of the paths I have spent a lot of time clearing. Hart went straight to this tree and pointed it out to Deana. If you’re from around here, you have probably had the occasion to run across beech trees in the woods. They are known for growing very large as well as their slick bark that people carve things into. You usually see things like TB loves DH inside of a circle with an arrow through it. This particular carving, which I was totally unaware of, was carved into this tree in 2008 by my sister Angie. No surprise there but nevertheless a reminder to all of us (from one of my All-Time favorite people) that it makes no difference what may be going on in this world right now, we already know how the story ends.

THIS MIGHT HURT JUST A LITTLE BIT

To our valued dental family:

We have operated on limited hours over the past week which appears to have been appropriate however it looks like we will likely face the brunt of potential exposure to COVID-19 during the next two weeks. With that in mind, we are going to make the following alterations to our schedule over the next week.

Thursday, March 26th 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Friday, March 27th CLOSED
Monday, March 30th CLOSED
Tuesday, March 31st CLOSED

We plan to assess the current CDC recommendations as well as those coming from our local authorities and state regulatory agencies as we decide when to open past that date, but for now, we hope to reopen on Wednesday, April 1st. Please check our page and/or our website (www.browdersmiles.com) for updates to this schedule.
If you happen to be having any issue which you feel might possibly need attention PRIOR to April 1st (or perhaps even longer than that), please call the office and let us see if there is anything that we can do between now and Thursday, March 26th at 12:30 PM when we will be closing.
We will be making direct contact with anyone who already has an appointment during these times. If you are a patient of record and if you are having a true dental emergency, you may reach Dr. Browder at 336.813.3754.
We regret having to do this and appreciate your understanding. Please be safe, keep your distance, and know that we look forward to seeing your happy smiles after things return to normal.

Due to the coronavirus situation, we have decided to close the office for the remainder of this week and plan to re-open on Tuesday, March 24th at 8:00 AM. In the meantime, if you are a patient of record and are having a true dental emergency (pain, swelling, etc.), please call Dr. Browder at 336-813-3754. We thank you for your understanding during this unusual time and look forward to seeing you in the very near future.

I think Digby just wants to take a long nap and get up when all of this is over!!

A different kind of corona virus notification...

Over the past few days, we have been inundated with emails and notices from all the businesses, suppliers, vendors, colleagues and competitors, and such about how serious they are taking COVID-19. Of course we do too but we are even implementing additional precautions here at the office and we wanted to be sure everyone knew. As you can see from the writing in the upper right hand corner of this photo, we have taken steps JUST TODAY to ensure the safety of our toilet paper inventory.

And yes, we are being even crazier than usual with our sterilization and disinfection practices!!!

Many of you have heard me talk about how much I enjoy winter with the main reason being that I love to have a real fire in my fireplace. At the end of the day, if I get in my car and it says 50 degrees or less, there will be a fire built as soon as I get home. I have been known to cut my own wood, but the size of a recent huge red oak that was uprooted left me seeking professional help. On that note, let me highly recommend Reid Marshall of Advance. I have known Reid and his family for years and he has definitely impressed me with his hard work ethic. He did a great job in difficult terrain and as you can see, he is extremely neat with his work. He also sells wood by the truck load and does many other home services that always seem to pop up when least expected. His number is 336.909.1606.
In case you think my gator looks a bit cattywhompus, we thank Hart for that one!!

I never envisioned myself taking classes with my children, but today it happened. We are in Boston at the annual Yankee Dental Congress meeting. My classroom sidekick? None other than Sydney Browder! She chose “Treatment Options for the Edentulous Patient” which would not have even cracked my top ten list but it was a pleasure and privilege just to be with her as an actual participant at her first major dental convention.
As an aside, it has become quite clear that we have set the trend with having a therapy dog in the office. This meeting actually has two therapy dogs roaming the aisles. Neither can hold a candle to Digby who is at home under the care of his Meme and Granddaddy.

Not what you might normally see on a dental office page, but I’ve noticed that posts about teeth rarely attract much attention...
Here is some news. Despite Court Mitchell’s best attempts at turning me into a hunter, it just never really took with me so I’m not sure where this came from, but Hart got his first kill this weekend. I assume the blood across the bridge of his nose is his right of passage. I’m looking forward to a reduced grocery bill and healthier, living landscape plantings. It’s nice to know we will always have plenty to eat. I’m officially impressed.

NATIONAL FETCH DAY! 🎾.....who knew??

There’s a day for everything and I had no idea that today was Digby’s day. I realize that everyone is accustomed to seeing a very quiet, calm Digby in the dental office, but outside of the office and especially if there is a ball involved, he can get pretty excited. So in observation of National Fetch Day, Digby got to go to the beach for several rounds of chuckit!! Only downside to this is that he knows a full blown bath and blow drying has to happen before he gets back in the house.

10/13/2019

Last night Deana and I had a wonderful time with some of our very dearest friends from dental school. Dr. Tracy Edwards of Burlington (in the blue sparkling gown) does great work with a group I had never heard of before. Little Pink Houses of Hope provides vacation retreats for family groups that are coping with the devastation of breast cancer. This event hosted a sit down dinner for over 900 people. Complete with a Dancing With the Stars competition, it was a total blast and I feel certain was quite the financial success for this wonderful organization. For additional information, please see littlepink.org .

WHO SAYS DENTISTS DON’T WORK ON FRIDAYS?

Well, in all fairness, we only work every other Friday but that counts, right? I was even able to get Digby up and at ‘em today. Look closely...Digby is showing my sweet patient how to stick his tongue out!!

Nearly 25 years experience. Davie County raised. Davie County owned. Davie County operated.

We are one Carolina fan short this weekend but when Hart is in the house, it’s about all the fun we can stand. C***s or Heels? Time will tell!! We are hoping nobody melts before we find out.

Many times when adolescents go through the orthodontic process, we see enamel that becomes unhealthy with the end product being chalky, white “hot spots” on their teeth. Not only does it create an aesthetic concern, but in some cases these areas can become full blown cavities (decay). The case shown here is a good example of not only that phenomenon but also how we can correct it and get things back where they should be. The first picture is prior to any treatment. The middle picture shows the case with only the right side completed and then the final picture is after we finished everything. This is a simple bonding procedure and although somewhat time consuming is a relatively inexpensive and easy way to remove diseased tissue and enhance the appearance of an otherwise beautiful smile. The front 8 teeth were all bonded in this example.

Tomorrow we will have both kids back in school. Last night home with Hart as he heads back to USC for his third year.

08/12/2019

So many people liked my post last year with Miss Ann Barnhardt that I thought I would post an updated shot WITH DIGBY!! Still one of everyone’s all time favorites and with an awesome set of chompers on top of that!! Thanks for coming to see us!!

07/26/2019

I love it when you have a Friday off and it just happens to coincide with special events. Happy birthday Deana and congratulations to Sydney as she embarks on an exciting 4-year journey into dentistry. Very proud of both. Ohhh, and in keeping with Browder rules, there has to be at least one of us working at all times and Hart is pulling that load for us today in North Carolina. Miss him.

INSTANT ORTHODONTICS

Some of you may have heard the term “Instant Ortho”. Admittedly I am not a fan of this particular method of straightening teeth but there are some circumstances that fit better than others. In this case you can see that there is some fairly significant crowding of teeth and both lateral incisors (next to the front teeth) are almost blocked out of the arch in addition to being a little too high up. The obvious solution would be to go into traditional orthodontics and then restore the teeth appropriately. This patient did not want to spend the time or money to do that and so we used the freedom of robbing space from one area to give to another area to “instantly straighten” these teeth. You will notice in the full arch photo that we also took this opportunity to restore several posterior teeth that had old, leaking, and cracked restorations. Needless to say, this nice patient was thrilled with the final result.

WORLD CHAMPION GOLD MEDAL WINNER!!!!!!!
There aren’t many people that can go from dying to being a world champion in just a little over two years, but are any of us surprised that our very own Jenny Barnhardt has done just that????? For the past ten days Jenny has been with her Over 65 division softball team at the World games in New Mexico. Rest assured, I gave her one more lecture about how easily she could hurt herself doing this. I’m happy to report that Jenny has just messaged me (with the attached photos) with word that her Wanna Bees softball team beat the Minnesota Lady Loons 15-7 to win the gold medal. I asked her who the hero or star of the game had been and she said, “No stars - a team effort” which most likely translates to her being a major contributor. We are so happy for Jenny’s success in so many areas and look forward to her return to the office next week. Congratulations Wanna Bees and Jenny. We are proud of you.
